23 июля 2001 года, за полтора месяца до теракта, Ларри Сильверстайн взял ВТЦ в аренду на 99 лет за 3,2 миллиарда долларов. Сразу выкладывать все деньги за покупку Ларри не стал, разбил их на ежемесячные платежи.
И до 11 сентября выплатил лишь 14 миллионов. Зато приобретение свое застраховал на 3,6 миллиарда. Отдельным пунктом в договоре была страховка на случай теракта.
После трагедии Ларри оформил это как два теракта, так как было два самолета, и получил от страховых компаний двойную сумму — 7,2 миллиарда долларов.
